On the 7th of August 2013 through the 9th of August 2013, the Youth Environmental Ambassadors Club completed the school year with their annual summer camp. The members of YEA club consisted of high school students from Madolenihmw High School and Nanpei Memorial High School. Since 2005 the focus of each summer camp has alternated between a terrestrial or marine focus. This years’ summer camp was held at Pahn Takai, U, which is a Terrestrial Base, with a total of 32 students attending from the two high schools. 10th Locally Managed Marine Areas Network Cross-site Visit

On November 14-16, the Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMA) network of Pohnpei also known as Pohnpei Marine Protected Areas Network conducted its annual learning exchange workshop. Over the past 10 years, the LMMA sites of Pohnpei unite for an annual learning exchange through what is called the Cross-site Visit. The workshop ended with the signing of a Standard Operations Procedure for several Global Positioning System units given to each of the community-led Marine Protected Areas of Pohnpei.

Launched in 2006, the Micronesia Challenge (MC) calls for the effective management of the natural resources on which all Micronesians depend for a healthy future, to protect our unique island cultures, and sustain livelihoods. In the past seven years, we have made substantial progress including the establishment or strengthening of more than150 protected areas covering over 680,000 hectares, leveraging over $20 million in operational funds, including an endowment that currently stands at over $13 million, identified and are monitoring key regional measures of success, and mentored over twenty Young Champions. The Micronesia Challenge spans 2.5 million square miles of ocean, an area nearly the size of the continental U.S. that supports the livelihoods of 650,000 people and protects: 66 threatened species on the IUCN Red List 480+ coral species 1,300+ reef fish species 85 birds species 1,400 plant species.

Green Road Show 2011

January 1, 2012 | Through a strong partnership between the Pohnpei State Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Conservation Society of Pohnpei (CSP), the Green Road Show (GRS) program has been able to continue its organized environmental science program study visits to all 27 partner schools on Pohnpei, successfully delivering CSP’s key conservation message to more than 950 fifth grade students around the island. Topics covered included the impact of agricultural cultivation practices on forest health, invasive weeds, water quality issues, the problem of trash, and the unique mangrove forest habitat.

January 1, 2012 | CSP and the New York Botanical Garden are pleased to announce the publication of two new reference books that we hope will encourage the conservation of plants and their habitats as well as promote sustainable management of plants. The Pohnpei Primary Health Care Manual: Health Care in Pohnpei, Micronesia, and Traditional Uses of Plants for Health and Healing, developed as a reference for medical professionals and others knowledgeable about the use of plants for healing, combines Western medical knowledge, traditional Pohnpeian botanical remedies, and information about pharmacological efficacy and toxicity.

January 1, 2012 | This year our Terrestrial Team endured countless days of sweaty toil, cold and sleepless nights, torrential rains, and clouds of fierce mosquitoes beneath the lush forest canopy in its vigorous efforts to survey and mark the boundaries of the Sokehs Watershed Forest Reserve, a project that directly supports Pohnpei State’s vision to set aside over 5,000 hectares of upland forest in accordance with the Watershed Forest Reserve and Mangrove Act of 1987.

November 24-25, 2011 | CSP in partnership with the Division of Forestry and Pohnpei State Government, successfully facilitated the 2nd Pohnpei Watershed Learning Exchange Summit. The summit addressed issues relating to water pollution from animal and human waste, unsustainable upland forest conversions for agriculture, and invasive threats facing our upland forests and also provided a clear framework for future planning strategies. The event involved a team of community leaders from Madolenihmw, U, and Nett, known as the Community Conservation Officers (CCOs).

YEA Club Summer Camp

August 10, 2011 | Twenty-nine high school students from Madolenihmw High School and Nanpei Memorial High School gathered at Senpehn Community Center, the base camp for the 6th Annual Youth Environmental Ambassadors Summer Camp. The participating students were all members of the Youth Environmental Ambassadors Club (YEA), which began at PICS High School, Calvary Christian Academy (CCA), and the Seventh-Day Adventist High School (SDA) in 2005 and has since grown to include Madolenihmw High School and Nanpei Memorial High School.
